Jonah Benton’s Top Cheese Picks!
Jonah Benton, one half of the dynamic duo of Benton Brother’s Fine Cheese, is very serious about his cheese. He spent more than a decade working with some of the most prominent figures in the Canadian Cheese industry before deciding to go into business for himself with his brother, Andrew.
We asked Jonah to put together a cheese board of his favourite artisan cheeses, and he delivered! This selection hits all the right notes, starting with a creamy and earthy Island Brie from Little Qualicum Cheeseworks. We love this very special brie, made in Parksville with cow's milk from happy cows, which have been fed only sweet grass and grains. Next up we have a Cave Aged Gruyere by Von Muhlenen- the most popular cheese in Benton Brother’s case, known for its rich flavour and slightly crunchy texture from crystalized milk proteins.
Next up, Kroon’s Goat Gouda from Holland is aged for 6-9 months for a smooth, creamy texture and deliciously mild milky flavour, hint of grassiness and classic goat's milk tang. Last but certainly not least is a 4 Year Raw Milk Cheddar from Fromagerie Perron, one of the best classic Canadian Cheddars available today! The cheese is plated beautifully on a wooden platter, with The Preservatory’s Fig and Walnut Wine Preserve, Panzanella Crackers, dried cranberries and apricots. As a lover of wine, Jonah has made this board very wine friendly, try it with a full bodied red, or a Colheita Port.

ABOUT BENTON BROTHERS FINE CHEESE
Engineer brothers turned cheesemongers, specializing in Artisan Cheese!
As the name suggests, this company is owned and operated by two brothers, Jonah and Andrew Benton. Both brothers studied engineering before falling in love with the cheese business. After Andrew graduated, he was looking for a job in his new field and his Dad suggested looking for another job in the meantime. Andrew ended up taking a position at a cheese shop (which his Dad approved of, thinking of the possibility of cheese discounts). As Andrew’s passion for cheese grew, he shared it with his brother, Jonah, who had been working as an Engineer for a couple years, and the rest is history.
After about a decade working in the cheese industry in Alberta and Ontario they relocated to Vancouver and started Benton Brothers Fine Cheese in 2007. They sell the highest quality artisan cheese from Canada and around the world. You will find these cheeses are often more complex in flavour as they are made by skilled cheesemakers with age-old recipes and without machinery. With the Brothers’ passion for all things food, wine, and cheese, it’s no wonder Benton Brothers is a mainstay of the Granville Island community.
